THE POSITION

An Animal Control Officer, under general supervision, enforces state and local laws regarding wild, stray, dangerous and nuisance domestic and wild animals; investigates complaints; patrols assigned areas; captures animals; cleans and maintains City animal shelter facilities; feeds, monitors and handles domestic and wild animals held at the shelter; assists the public in location and handling of animals; performs related work as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in animal care or control. Additional coursework or training in animal health, animal behavior, and/or control is desirable.

Patrols designated areas to enforce animal control laws and ordinances regulating the possession, humane treatment, handling, confinement, transportation, use and disposal of animals; issues citations and impounds animals and performs related work.

Comprehend and apply regulations governing licensing, rabies abatement and prevention.

Analyze situations and apply established procedures and good judgment to enforce animal control and laws.

Utilize tact, judgment and strategy in dealing with a wide variety of people, both friendly and hostile.

To perform this job successfully an individual must have a genuine interest in animals and their well-being.

Knowledge of physical and behavioral characteristics of dogs, cats and livestock, animal care, feeding and handling.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Six(6) months of experience dealing with the public in a service-related capacity; AND

Completion of at least thirty (30) semester college units at an accredited college or university with course work related to animal control, law enforcement, or criminal justice; OR

Six(6) months of experience as an Animal Control Officer, OR

Six (6) months professional experience working in an animal control agency or humane society, veterinary or kennel/boarding facility, ranch or zoo handling, controlling and caring for animals.

High school graduate or equivalent required. Experience in customer service preferred as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. Candidate must be proficient in MS office. They must have a positive and upbeat attitude.

The Deputy Chief is responsible for supervising operational staff to provide enforcement and ensure public compliance with all federal, state, and local laws related to Animal Control. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills that promote a positive, professional, team orientated work environment, as well as, the ability to work with staff at all levels. The Deputy Chief must possess a thorough understanding of animal control laws and the legal system in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. This position assists the Chief Animal Control Officer with developing and tracking the Division's annual budget, monitoring performance measures to ensure all departmental policies and procedures are adhered to, implementing new programs, policies, and procedures, and working to improve methods of service delivery to the citizens of Loudoun County. The ability to build positive working relationships with County and local government elected and administration officials, public safety officials and officers, citizen groups and organizations and the public at large is critical for success. The Deputy Chief will facilitate and encourage staff development and training.

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma and seven (7) years of directly related professional level work, including one (1) year supervisory and/or team leadership experience. Experience with companion animals, livestock, exotics, and wildlife is required. Must possess a valid driver's license. A Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or a directly related field is preferred.
